What is a topographical survey?

A topographical survey (also called a topographic survey, topo survey or land survey) is a precise map of a site’s surface — recording its levels, contours, boundaries and every visible feature, from trees and walls to kerbs and manhole covers. It shows exactly how the ground sits and what is on it, tied to Ordnance Survey grid and height datum.

For anyone designing on a site — architects, engineers, developers and self-builders — it’s the essential first step: you can’t properly design drainage, levels, access or a building’s relationship to the ground without knowing what the ground actually does. Blackacre combines GNSS/GPS and robotic total-station control with laser scanning to deliver survey-grade data ready for design.

Very often, yes. Local authorities frequently require existing levels, contours and site features to be shown on planning drawings, and architects need them to design accurately. It’s usually one of the first surveys commissioned on a development.

It depends on the size and complexity of the site. Time on site can be a few hours for a small plot or several days for a large or heavily featured site; processed CAD and terrain deliverables follow once the data is worked up. We’ll confirm timings when we quote.

A topographical survey maps the land — ground levels, contours and external features. A measured building survey records the building — floor plans, elevations and sections. Because our data is georeferenced, we can deliver both and combine them into one coherent model.
